About Peyton Fire Protection District
The Peyton Fire Protection District proudly serves the residents, businesses, and visitors of eastern El Paso County, Colorado. Established in 1955, the District was created by community members who recognized the need for local fire protection services following the loss of the Peyton schoolhouse to fire in 1954. The members met at the Grange Hall and created the Peyton Volunteer Fire Department, laying the foundation for the organization that continues to serve the community today.
Today, the District provides fire suppression, emergency medical response, rescue services, wildfire response, public education, and community risk reduction throughout approximately 110 square miles of eastern El Paso County.
Our Community
Peyton’s history dates back to the late 1880s when the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad extended its line across eastern Colorado. The community was originally known as “Mayfield” before being renamed Peyton after local settler George Peyton. The first passenger train arrived in 1888, helping establish Peyton as an important agricultural and transportation hub on Colorado’s eastern plains.

Over the decades, Peyton evolved from a small railroad and farming community into a growing rural area that maintains its agricultural roots while serving families, business, and neighborhoods throughout the region. The District continues to adapt to meet the changing needs of this growing community while preserving the values of service, professionalism, and neighbor helping neighbor.
